“The Poetry of Spiritual Formation: a one-month devotional,” is based on a collection of poems by Brandon Scott Elrod. The arrangement of the poems is intended to take the reader on a journey over 31 days with God. The journey begins with our acknowledgment of our failed attempts at self-sufficiency. Failure is not defined, in this case, as the inability to “make it happen,” whatever “it” is, rather, it refers to our inability to find intimacy with God through our performance, duty and achievements.
Each poem is accompanied by 5 questions that are designed to pull the reader into an introspective engagement with God. A lesser intent is that the reader will be inspired by or connect with the poetry; the greater intent is that the subsequent reflection ushers the reader into that place familiar to King David, the place of honesty with God and self.
